St. John's is a church which is rich with diversity. Our congregations meet in four different languages: English, Persian (Farsi), Mandarin and Cantonese. But if you turn up for the 9:30am English Congregation on a Sunday you'll meet Indians, Sri Lankans, Chinese, Malaysians, Iranians, Africans and of course Anglo Saxons. Our 9:30am children's program is conducted in English but it does double duty for the Cantonese and English Congregations.
Our youth ministry includes groups that combine young people from Chinese, English and Sub Continental backgrounds. Once a year we combine the Chinese and English congregations and the Persian and English congregations. If you come to the Community Carols event you'll be sharing with people from a vast range of backgrounds.
It's a reflection of the City of Parramatta. But it's also a reflection of God's work in the world. In John's vision of heaven recorded in Revelation 7:9 it says, 'I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb.' But God gathers his people, no matter where they come from, by the proclamation of the good news about Jesus. That is the business of the church. And that is the business of St. John's. We believe that the Bible is the word of God given by his Spirit. We believe that it tells us all we need to know for salvation to eternal life and for wisdom to live for Jesus. We believe that Jesus came to us as God, died to take our punishment and rose from the dead to be seated on the throne of heaven with all authority to judge the living and the dead. And Jesus forgives all those who trust and follow him. St. John's is a Reformed Protestant Evangelical Anglican Church.
Therefore we rejoice in our diversity but we rejoice even more in our unity which comes from belonging to Jesus. And we rejoice in the community that God has established among us by drawing people from all over the world.
